Background
U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi arrived in Taiwan on August 2, 2022. The Chinese government called the visit a U.S. and Taiwan provocation. The Eastern Theater Command immediately announced joint military actions around Taiwan and published several live-fire exercise zones. The operation combined political retaliation, military training, and blockade-related scenarios in one period. [1]
Chronology
- August 2: The Eastern Theater Command announced air and sea drills, long-range fire, and conventional missile launches.
- August 4: Live-fire activity began. Publicly named subjects included joint blockade, maritime strike, land attack, and air superiority. Japan's defense authorities later recorded nine ballistic missile launches and said five landed inside Japan's claimed exclusive economic zone. [2] [5]
- August 5 to 9: PLA air and naval activity continued around Taiwan. On August 9, the command announced further joint blockade and support exercises beyond the first live-fire period. [3]
- August 10: The command declared the series complete but said regular combat-readiness patrols in the Taiwan Strait direction would continue. [4]
Institutions and actions
The CCP leadership and Central Military Commission determine Taiwan military policy. The Eastern Theater Command organized naval, air, rocket, and other forces. The Foreign Ministry framed the operation as a response to Pelosi's visit. Maritime and aviation authorities issued safety information, while defense bodies in Taiwan, Japan, and other states tracked routes, median-line crossings, and missile impacts.
The exercise areas applied pressure from several directions around Taiwan, and the announced subjects included blockade and strike operations. They establish that the PLA trained for those missions. Official publicity alone does not establish how effectively the forces would perform in war.
Official positions
Chinese officials called the actions necessary to protect sovereignty and territorial integrity and directed them against Taiwan independence forces and U.S. provocation. Military statements stressed joint blockade, precision strike, and multi-service coordination. Taiwan condemned the operation as destabilizing. Japan protested after missiles entered waters it claims as its exclusive economic zone.
Outcome
Activity did not fully return to the pattern that existed before the visit. Regular readiness patrols and military operations around Taiwan became more frequent, and later exercises continued to use blockade, joint-strike, and multi-axis scenarios. Political signaling and routine readiness increasingly overlapped, making it harder to distinguish a short demonstration from sustained coercion or a higher level of military preparation.
Evidence limits
PLA statements establish the announced dates, areas, and exercise subjects. Japanese defense records establish what Japan monitored regarding missile numbers and impact locations. Public sources do not disclose the full Central Military Commission order, operational rules of engagement, or actual unit performance. The evidence does not support treating the exercises as proof that a decision to invade had already been made. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]
